GOLF CLUB VILLA D'ESTE - ELEGANCE AND TRADITION
The course of the Villa d'Este Golf Club was born in 1926 on the Como hills that dominate Lake Montorfano and in the suggestive perimeter of a forest of over 30 thousand chestnut, pine and birch trees: a scenario of incomparable natural beauty, a corner of paradise that has been and is still a favorite destination for the most refined golfers in the world.
On the golden book of the club there are the signatures of King Leopold of Belgium and Queen Liliana De Retby, their son Baldwin, Edward of England, Alfonso XIII of Spain, Constantine of Greece and all the beautiful names of the European aristocracy, as well as the Gothas of the world art and cinema industry with Clarke Gable and Bing Crosby in the lead.
In 1925 the company that owned the Grand Hotel Villa d’Este in Cernobbio commissioned the commission of the land, the design and construction of the route to a commission made up of Count Alberto Bellinzaghi Locatelli, Amerigo Ponti and Guglielmo D’Ombrè.
The suitable terrain was chosen in Montorfano and immediately after, the design of the route was entrusted to the English architect Peter Gannon. The foundation stone was laid in 1926 and, two years later, Circolo Golf Villa d'Este entered the history of this ancient and noble sport.
The Villa d’Este Golf Club boasts 12 Italian Open, 57 Men's International Championships and 39 editions of the Women's Championship. The latter entered, in the history and in the golden register of the event, 12 times the name of Isa Bevione Goldschmidt, the greatest Italian golfer ever.
The Circolo golf villa d’Este had the honor of hosting in 1998 the St. Andrews Trophy, the most important European golfing event for amateurs.
It is important to remember what was written at the time in a short history of the club: “A path chosen for demanding competitions, for all categories and ages, cared for, bred and improved day by day with the scruple and care that the beautiful things, with an attention equal to that which belongs to living things, such as the splendid nature of the path itself ".
